Barcelona Star Aguero Could Be Forced to Retire Because of Cardiac Condition

Fresh info from Spain claims Sergio Aguero might need to hang up his boots after his cardiac arrhythmia proved more complicated than was originally thought.

Aguero was advised to take a three-month break from football and to receive treatment after he needed to be taken off the pitch in Barcelona’s La Liga match against Alaves at Camp Nou on Oct. 30 because of persistent chest pain and breathing problems. He was transported to a hospital straight from the stadium and underwent a series of tests, with the doctors claiming it was arrhythmia that caused his discomfort.

On Friday, Catalunya Radio reported that recent tests showed that Aguero’s heart problem is worse than originally thought, with retirement now a consideration for the 33-year-old. Aguero responded to the speculation through a message posted on his Twitter account, saying he is following medical advice, but not denying the news about a potential early exit from football.

“To address the rumors, I can say that I am following the advice of the club’s doctors, completing tests and treatment and seeing my progress after 90 days. Always positive,” Aguero wrote on his social media page.

Against Alaves, Aguero only started his second game since joining FC Barcelona from Manchester City on a free transfer over the summer. Aguero was kept on the sidelines for the first two months of the campaign with calf problems. He scored just one goal for Barcelona in the 2-1 home defeat to arch-rivals Real Madrid in El Clasico on Oct. 24.

Before signing for Barcelona, the Argentinian spent 10 years with Manchester City.

Aguero isn’t the first high-profile player with a heart condition diagnosed after a football game. At Euro 2020, Denmark and Inter’s Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during the clash against Finland and had to be resuscitated on the pitch. Eriksen is out for the season, with a decision on his future expected to be made in 2022.
