Johnson, DeChambeau Could Rule DFS Leaderboards at the Masters

Yes, it’s odd, but it’s November and Masters week is upon us. While we will be treated to more fall foliage than blooming azaleas, the field will remain the same as it would have been in April, which means we should see a good mix of young stars and long-in-the-tooth former champions with no chance to win.

A bulked-up Bryson DeChambeau, now with significantly more muscle than in this picture from 2018, could overpower Augusta National. But, he could also flame out. He’s a boom or bust option in DFS at the Masters this week. (Image: Gregory Shamus/Getty)

Augusta National will play at 7,445 yards and the top 50 plus ties will make the cut out of 95 starters. There are two guys near the top of the salary chart I really want, so I’ll build a lot of lineups with a stars-and-scrubs format. Here are five of my top picks.

Bryson DeChambeau ($11,200 on DraftKings, $12,100 on FanDuel)

With DeChambeau you get high risk and high reward – which you need to win a big DFS tournament. DeChambeau will bomb it at the Masters, but will that yield eagles and birdies or bogeys and double bogeys? My money is on the former. DeChambeau has played just once since winning the US Open, finishing eighth at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Dustin Johnson ($10,000 on DK, $11,800 on FD)

Johnson’s recent form has been incredible: second, first, second, first, sixth, and second. He’s shown nice results at the Masters, too, missing the cut just once in nine tries, with his best finish a three-way tie for second last year when Tiger Woods won. Johnson should be highly owned, but we can capture lower ownership with some of the salary-savers below.

Jason Day ($8,400 on DK, $9,900 on FD)

If not for a mediocre final round at the Vivant Houston Open last week, Day could have contended for the win. His seventh represented a return to mid-2020 form that saw him notch four consecutive top 10s. That could be a good sign heading into the Masters, where he’s scored three top-five finishes in nine tournaments.

Zach Johnson ($6,800 on DK, $8,100 on FD)

Johnson won the Masters in 2007 and has proven hit and miss since, missing five cuts in 12 tournaments at Augusta National. He’s played well lately, which could be a good sign for this week. Johnson made six consecutive cuts and finished inside the top 10 twice – including an eighth at the last major, the US Open.

Sebastian Munoz ($6,700 on DK, $7,900 on FD)

Munoz is now three months separated from his last missed cut, and has seven top 30s in the nine events he played in that time. Those include three trips inside the top 10. My greatest concern is that this is Munoz’s first trip to Augusta National, so it’s anybody’s guess how nerves could affect him at the Masters. But at this price, he’s worth a flier.
