The New York Jets (1-5) were blanked 33-0 by the New England Patriots (7-0) on Monday Night Football. Mic’d up Jets QB, Sam Darnold, admitted he was seeing ghosts against the Patriots stifling defense.
One week after playing their best game of the season with an upset over the Dallas Cowboys, the LOLJets reared their ugly head with their worst game of the season. Even worse, the LOLJets were humiliated in front of a nationally televised audience on Monday Night football.
The Patriots won both games against the Jets this season and improved to 7-0 overall. The Pats are in first place in the AFC East, and one of only two undefeated teams in the NFL along with the 6-0 San Francisco 49ers.
SAM DARNOLD STATS VS. PATRIOTS 10/21/19
Passing: 11 for 32, 86 Yards
Touchdowns: 0
Interceptions: 4
Sacks: 1
QBR: 0.7
Rating: 3.6
The Jets mustered up 154 total yards of offense. Darnold passed for only 86 yards. Le’Veon Bell rushed for 70 yards on 19 carries, despite the dreadful offensive line.
The Jets have now lost eight straight games against the Patriots. The only good thing about this game is that the Jets don’t have to play against Bill Belichick and the Patriots again until next season.
LOLJets Embarrassed by Brady and Belichick Again
Tom Brady engineered a 16-play touchdown drive to start the game. The Pats marched down the field using surgical passing strikes. After getting in the hole 7-0, the Jets coughed the ball up on the ensuing possession.
Darnold threw an interception on the second play from scrimmage. The Patriots gifted the Jets with a three-and-out, so they only picked up a field goal off the turnover. The Jets were down 10-0, and it was all downhill from there.
Darnold and the offense flailed on their second possession with a disappointing three-and-out. The Pats marched 67 yards downfield unencumbered to score another touchdown. The Jets were down 17-0 before the first quarter ended.
On the next drive, Darnold fumbled during a sack. The Patriots took advantage of the turnover and scored a touchdown nine plays later. The Pats extended their lead to 24-0 with 14 minutes remaining in the second quarter. That’s when the mic’d up Darnold made the now infamous seeing ghosts comment after the Patriots sack and fumble recovery.
Late in the second quarter, the Jets went deep into Pats territory, but Darnold threw an interception in the red zone to kill their only opportunity at scoring against the best D in the NFL. At that point, if you didn’t turn off the TV, you probably couldn’t find the remote.
Luckily, Nice Bill had pity on the Jets, and the Pats only scored nine more points the remainder of the game. And two of those were on a safety.
Sam Darnold Seeing Ghosts
Darnold wore a microphone for ESPN during the game. While on the sidelines, the hot mic caught Darnold muttering to himself about seeing ghosts amidst the Patriots defensive players.
“Did Sam Darnold just say he was seeing ghosts?” asked Monday Night Football announcer Joe Tessitore.
The New England Patriots never let Darnold get into a rhythm with blitzes that were never picked up by the offensive line. The Pats smothering defense confused Darnold so much that he lost all confidence in his O-line. As a result, he saw phantom rushers all night long.
“When I talk to the coaches, I just got to be straight up and, for me, I just got to see the field a lot better,” explained Darnold about the ghosts remark. “That’s kind of what that means. It was a rough night out there, and obviously, I’ve got to be better and learn from the mistakes but we will get better.”
The seeing ghosts comment by Darnold went viral, of course. The LOLJets walked into a meme once again.
An apoplectic Adam Gase had issues that ESPN aired the ghosts comment.
“Obviously, you’re never anticipating something like that happening,” said Gase. “The fact that it did just gives us pause to really cooperate anymore. I don’t know how we can allow our franchise quarterback to be put out there like that.”

After that 33-0 spanking, Darnold will be having a recurring nightmare about this game the rest of his life. Darnold already took a ton of guff from Internet trolls after missing several Jets games with mononucleosis, so he’ll never be able to escape the seeing ghosts comment. If Darnold has a good sense of humor, he’ll own the seeing ghosts comment and wear a Ghostbusters costume at the Jets Halloween party this year.
On Deck: Jags and Dolphins
The Jets hit the road for two games in Florida. The Jets play the Jaguars (3-4) in Jacksonville in Week 8. Gardner Minshew and the Jags opened as a 6-point favorite.
In Week 9, the Jets face the Miami Dolphins (0-6) in the battle of the AFC East basement. The Jets finally draw and easy opponent.
Then again, the way they LOLJets have been playing, they could easily gift the Dolphins their first win of the season. The most LOLJets thing ever would be a loss to the tanking Dolphins in a game the Fish were trying to do everything possible to lose.
