Harry Maguire’s home was swept by the police on Thursday afternoon after the Manchester United captain received a bomb threat.
Maguire lives with his fiance Fern Hawkins and their two children.
“In the last 24 hours, Harry has received a serious threat to his family home,” Maguire’s spokesman said. “He has reported this to the police who are now looking into the matter. The safety of his family and those around him is obviously Harry’s number one priority.”
The Cheshire Constabulary also made a statement on the matter, saying that police were “called to reports of a bomb threat at an address in the Wilmslow area.” Police said that no evacuations took place, but a police explosives dog attended the address to conduct a search of the gardens and surrounding area as a precautionary measure.
Maguire has been heavily criticized for his performances in the United shirt this season, with many voices calling for him to be stripped of the team captaincy. Interim boss Ralf Rangnick stood by Maguire and kept him in the role. There are also rumors suggesting Maguire and Ronaldo have a poor relationship, with Ronaldo reportedly refusing to talk to the England defender.
A group of Manchester United supporters has started an online petition asking for the club’s armband to go to another player.
Maguire joined United in 2019 becoming the most expensive defender in the history of football. The Red Devils paid a staggering $100 million to sign him from Leicester. The 29-year-old played 35 games across all competitions for Man. United this season, scoring two goals.
