Michelle Wie Aiming for Return at Women’s PGA Championship

This week will see the second consecutive major championship, this time the Women’s PGA Championship. The major is being held at famed Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

According to Ladbrokes, Brooke Henderson and Jeong Eun Lee6 are the favorites to win at 11/1. They are followed by Lexi Thompson at 12/1, and Jin Young Ko at 14/1.

One golfer who will be happy to be back on the golf course is Michelle Wie. The former teen sensation, who played in a PGA Tour event when she was just a teenager, has not had the type of success many thought she was destined to have.

Instead she has had disappointments and injuries. She is returning to the tour after taking the last two months off with a right-hand injury.  The 29-year-old undergoing surgery last October to repair an avulsion fracture, bone spurs and nerve entrapment in her right hand. She returned in February, but then had to pull out of her next start.

Now she appears to be ready to return to the links. Her coach David Leadbetter told Golf Channel that she will play this week.

“She’s starting to feel quite a bit better, but she fatigues quickly,” Leadbetter said. “She tells me she’s being pretty sensible in how she’s approaching things. She really needs to pace herself.”

Wie is listed at 200/1 to win this week.

Wild Ride for McDaniel

Chip McDaniel qualified for the US Open, ultimately finishing 78th, but then the real fun began. He wanted to play this week at the Traveler’s Championship, but has no status on tour, so he is forced to Monday qualify.

After Sunday’s final round at Pebble Beach, McDaniel drove two hours to San Francisco, then took a red eye flight to Boston. He and his caddie then drove 90 minutes to the qualifying site.

McDaniel made the qualifier and shot 67, which was good enough to get into a playoff. He survived the nine players for three spots and will be teeing it up Thursday.

“It was a pretty wild day,” McDaniel told Golf Digest. “I slept pretty much the entire five-hour flight but, man, I was still loopy when I got there.”

Koepka Favorite for Open Championship

Brooks Koepka finished second in the US Open, and was installed as the 6/1 favorite to win the Open Championship in July. Rory McIlroy is next at 10/1, followed by Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson at 12/1.

Koepka has struggled across the pond at the major championship. His best finish is a tie for sixth, and it is the one event of his last six that he didn’t finish in the top 10. Last year he finished tied for 39th.

This Week’s Odds, Pick

The PGA Tour is at the Traveler’s Championship, and Brooks Koepka is the 15/2 favorite, but we like Marc Leishman. The Australian is 25/1, and has won here before.
