New York Jets Injury Report: Safety Marcus Maye (Ankle) Out a Month

The New York Jets’ defense incurred a massive blow when they lost safety Marcus Maye for three to four weeks with an ankle injury.

Maye sprained his ankle in Week 3 against the Denver Broncos. Despite the injury, Maye didn’t miss a snap for the Jets and notched seven tackles in the 26-0 loss to the Broncos. Maye played every defensive snap for the Jets this season, so they’ll miss their anchor.

The LOL Jets are back to their old tricks after an anemic 0-3 start, but their lone highlight on the team was the play of Maye. He’s the heart and soul of the defense and a franchise-tagged player.

“Marcus should be back fully healthy just before the trade deadline,” tweeted Maye’s agent, Erik Burkhardt.

The tweet suggests that the Jets could shop Maye before the deadline on Nov. 2. He currently earns $10.6 million after signing a one-year deal under the franchise tag, but was disappointed the Jets didn’t offer him a more lucrative contract as the player with the longest tenure on their roster.

The Jets will play the Tennessee Titans in Week 4 without either of their starting safeties. Lamarcus Joyner went down in Week 1 with an elbow injury. Joyner had surgery to repair his elbow and he’s out for the rest of the season. Adrian Colber and Jarrod Wilson are the only other safeties on the roster, but the Jets could promote Sheldrick Redwine from the practice squad.

The rest of the Jets’ defense has also been decimated by injuries. Defensive end Carl Lawson went down in preseason with a blown-out Achilles. Linebacker Jarrad Davis suffered a high-ankle sprain and he’ll miss the first half of the season, and defensive end Vinny Curry had spleen surgery.

The winless Jets are +7 home dogs against the Titans.
