Rivalry Week: Georgia/Georgia Tech, ULM/ULL, Oregon/Oregon State, UNLV/Nevada

Rivalry week continues in college football with Georgia at Georgia Tech, UNLV at Nevada, Arizona at Arizona State, Oregon State at Oregon, and Louisiana-Monroe at Louisiana-Lafayette.

Athens is only 70 miles away from Atlanta, and the Georgia and Georgia Tech rivalry dates to 1893. The two schools have shed a lot of blood in the Clean, Old Fashioned Hate Rivalry.

Meanwhile out in the Pacific Northwest, Oregon and Oregon State meet in the Civil War, which was first played back in 1894.

UNLV and Nevada fight for the largest rivalry trophy in college football, known as the Fremont Cannon, which weighs 545 pounds and named after explorer John C. Fremont.

Meanwhile, Rice and UTEP are battling to avoid the moniker of worst football team in Texas.

Clean, Old Fashioned Hate

Georgia (10-1) at Georgia Tech (3-8)… Georgia and Georgia Tech first played each other in 1893. They meet for the 114th time this Saturday. Georgia leads the overall series 67-41-5, including going 15-3 against Georgia Tech this century. Georgia comes in as a 28-point favorite. Tech wants to play the role of spoiler and ruin Georgia’s national title aspirations. Georgia allows 10.7 points per game. The under is 9-2 for Georgia this season.

Worst Team in Texas?

Rice (2-9) at UTEP (1-10)… Two basement dwellers in Conference USA slug it out for the dubious honor of Worst Football Team in Texas. UTEP won their first game of the season, before losing the next 10 straight. Rice lost their first nine games of the season, and then won two in a row with victories over Middle Tennessee State and UTEP. The UTEP Miners are +7 home dogs in this one.

Battle of the Bayou

Louisiana-Monroe (5-6) at Louisiana-Lafayette (9-2)… The Ragin’ Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette (ULL) host the Louisiana-Monroe (ULM) Warhawks in the annual college football rivalry known as the Battle of the Bayou. The Cajuns have the fifth-best running attack in the nation, cranking out a whopping 276 yards per game. They have three stellar running backs led by junior Elijah Mitchell (14 TD, 6.0 yards per carry), Trey Ragas (11 TD, 7.8 yards per carry), and Ray Calais (5 TD, 7.4 yards per carry). ULL’s defense allows only 16.7 points per game. The Ragin’ Cajuns are -19.5 favorites.

Battle of Nevada

UNLV (3-8) at Nevada (7-4)… The Battle of Nevada is relatively new compared to ancient rivalries like Lehigh/Lafayette and Harvard/Yale. The winner of this rivalry will win the heaviest trophy in college football, the Fremont Cannon. The winner of the Fremont Cannon gets to paint it in their school colors. This is the 45th meeting between the two schools, and Nevada leads the series 27-17. The Runnin’ Rebels and the Wolfpack first met in 1969. Nevada is a 7-point favorite.

Duel in the Desert

Arizona (4-7) at Arizona State (6-5)… The Territorial Cup is at stake for the 93rd time. Arizona leads the series 49–42–1. Arizona State dominated the last 17 years with an 11-6 record, including two wins in a row. Herm Edwards’ Sun Devils are coming in fresh off a big upset over Oregon last week. Arizona State is favorited by almost two touchdowns. The over is 5-1 in the last six games for Arizona State. Arizona dropped six games in a row, and the Wildcats are 0-6 ATS in that stretch.

Oregon/Oregon State Civil War

Oregon State (5-6) at Oregon (9-2)… The Civil War rivalry will play out for the 123rd time, which is one of the longest-running college football rivalries on the West Coast. Oregon leads the series 65–47–10, and won 10 of the last 11 matchups. The winner walks away with the Platypus Trophy and bragging rights. Oregon is a 20-point favorite at home in Eugene, where they’re undefeated at 6-0.
