Christmas Super Bowl Odds: Betting on Old School or New School QBs?

On Christmas Eve, NFL fans hope that Santa Claus gifts them a path to win the Super Bowl. With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Kansas City Chiefs are +170 odds to win the Super Bowl according to a recent update by DraftKings. The Green Bay Packers (+650 odds), New Orleans Saints (+850), and Buffalo Bills (+900) round out the Top 4 in Super Bowl futures betting.

The Chiefs are the consensus favorite to win the Super Bowl in both Las Vegas and at offshore books worldwide. Kansas City entered this season as one of the favorites at 6/1 odds and remained at the top of the futures board all season.

The Green Bay Packers saw the biggest jump in their Super Bowl futures, from +5500 now to +2800 in the preseason.

SUPER BOWL 55 ODDS
WEEK 16 PRESEASON
Kansas City Chiefs +180 +660
Green Bay Packers +550 +2800
New Orleans Saints +850 +1100
Buffalo Bills +900 +2500
Seattle Seahawks +1300 +2000
Tampa Bay Bucs +1400 +1400
Baltimore Ravens +1400 +650
LA Rams +1500 +4000
Pittsburgh Steelers +2500 +2500
Tennessee Titans +2500 +2800
Indianapolis Colts +2800 +2200
Cleveland Browns +3000 +4000
Arizona Cardinals +5000 +5000
Washington +7000 +15000
Miami Dolphins +8000 +8000
NY Giants +175000 +8000

But which middle of the field team will make a run in the playoffs? Last season, Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City earned their first Super Bowl victory in nearly five decades by knocking off the two hottest teams in the playoffs — the San Francisco 49ers and Tennessee Titans.

Could the Tampa Bucs and Buffalo Bills become this year’s Niners and Titans?

Old Guard: Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Big Ben, and Rivers

You better have a top tier quarterback if you expect to run the table in the postseason and win the Super Bowl. Five vets and a half-dozen young guns are in the hunt for the championship.

Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Bucs are +1400 odds to win the Super Bowl. The Bucs saw an immediate flow of money tumble in on their Super Bowl futures the moment Brady signed with the Bucs.

Aaron Rodgers, seeking a third MVP, is one of the MVP co-favorites after an impressive season. The high-octane Packers generate 31-plus points a game. Their Swiss cheese defense has improved in recent weeks, which is why they’re now +550 odds to win the Super Bowl. If you’re going to beat the Packers, you better have the firepower to match Rodgers.

The New Orleans Saints are one of the top two teams in the NFC thanks to their defense this season. Drew Brees took a licking, but he’s not going to waste one of his last chance to bring home another title for What Dat nation. The Saints are +850 odds to win the Super Bowl, or the third highest on the NFL futures board.

The worn-down Pittsburgh Steelers hit the skids, but if Ben Roethlisberger can remain healthy in the playoffs, anything is possible because no one wins more ugly-type games than Big Ben and the Steelers.

Phil Rivers and the Indianapolis Colts have an outside shot at a division title, but they have a chance to lock up a postseason berth this weekend. Out of the five veteran quarterbacks mentioned in this section, Rivers is the only one without a Super Bowl title.

New School: Mahomes KC Reprise?

Patrick Mahomes, 25, looks unstoppable this season, which is why the Kansas City Chiefs are the team to beat in Super Bowl 55 at +180 odds.

Baker Mayfield led the Cleveland Browns to their best season in 25 years. But will their regular season magic translate into playoff wins in January? The Browns were +4000 odds to win the Super Bowl in the preseason, but now at +3000 odds.

Who hasn’t jump aboard the Buffalo Bills bandwagon yet? Josh Allen established himself as one of the top passers in the league not named Mahomes or Rodgers. The Bills were 10/1 odds last week on the futures board, but they’re now 9/1 odds.

The Baltimore Ravens and Lamar Jackson entered the season at +650 odds to win the Super Bowl but their odds dropped to +1400, while stuck on the AFC bubble.

Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals have been fun to watch this season. They’re still a flawed and inconsistent team, but I still wouldn’t want to have to play them in the NFC Wild Card. The Cards are long shots to win the Super Bowl at +5000 odds

Tua and the Miami Dolphins are another long shot at +8000 odds. The future looks bright for Tua, but the Dolphins are still a couple of players away from challenging the Bills for the AFC East crown.

Jared Goff and the LA Rams were the runner up in Super Bowl 53, but missed the postseason last year. They’re jockeying for first place in the NFC West with the Seattle Seahawks, but +1500 odds to win the Super Bowl.

Not Young, But Not Old Yet

Tennessee Titans were the runner up in the AFC Championship last season. Will they get revenge on Kansas City, who knocked them out last season? Tannenhill and the Titans are +2500 odds to win the Super Bowl. However, if the Titans want to go to the Big Dance, it’s going to be King Henry that carries them on his back. Henry is closing in on 2,000 rushing yards and showing no signs of slowing down.

Russell Wilson got off to a sizzling start in September. He was an early MVP favorite, but since cooled off. The Seahawks are plagued with a porous defense, which makes them suspect in the playoffs. The Seattle Seahawks are still jinxed with running back injuries, but they won’t have Marshawn Lynch to bail them out in January. I doubt they can lure Beastmode out of retirement once again. Despite the RB jinx and piss-poor defense, they still have Wilson, which is why the Seahawks are +1300 odds to win the Super Bowl.
