California at Arizona State was canceled Friday due to a COVID-19 outbreak at ASU, which includes an undisclosed number of players, coaches, staff along with Sun Devils’ Head Coach Herm Edwards.
“I encourage all of you to take this virus seriously, to wear a mask, practice physical distancing, and get tested whenever possible,†Edwards said.
Bears’ Season May Be Over Before it Begins
This is the Bears’ second scratch in a row and the second aborted effort to kick off their Pac-12 season.
The Pac-12 made the announcement Friday morning, and the game will be recorded as a no-contest. The matchup is the 13th game canceled in the last 72 hours and the 60th of the season as a historic weak of scratches continues.
“The Pac-12 has canceled the Cal at Arizona State football game scheduled for Nov. 14,†a released statement said Friday morning. “This decision was made under the Pac-12’s football game cancelation policy due to Arizona State not having the minimum number of scholarship players available for the game as a result of a number of positive football student-athlete COVID-19 cases and resulting isolation of additional football student-athletes under contact tracing protocols,â€

Last-Ditch Make-up and Schedule in Flux
At this point, the program’s return to the gridiron this season is in jeopardy even before it begins unless Cal can pull a last-minute scheduling coup. There is a chance that Cal could try for a Sunday reschedule of their week-one matchup vs. Washington, and school officials said no options are off the table to reboot the season.
